The Gathering Learning Studio is uniquely different from most traditional education and homeschool co-ops in that it embraces a 21st-century learning model that better prepares students for their future - a world where jobs are not yet created - and innovation, creativity, leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration are essential.
These 21st-century skills are practiced as students work with each other to learn work-related, employable skills while helping to solve real-world challenges in a community setting. This project-based learning approach allows local community leaders and employers to present students with a real work challenge, the project goal to achieve, and a deadline to achieve the goal, all the while offering guidance and mentorship to students as they work towards the completion of the project goal. This approach helps students to see the relevancy of their learning, allowing the siloed academic subjects to be integrated into solvable real-world work projects.
For core academic skills, students work on a personalized learning plan as determined by their parents and with the support of a learning coach. This unique hybrid learning model gives homeschooled families the flexibility of where to learn, how they learn, and at a pace that best fits their needs. Time is no longer the fixed variable of the one-size-fits-all approach to education. Rather, learning is fixed, and time is the variable that remains flexible. With daily goals, perseverance, and "just right learning," students thrive in their educational journey.
Students learn through hands-on, engaging, real-world projects presented by local community leaders and employers. There are no grades, tests, or traditional textbooks. An end-of-the-project exhibition provides students with feedback from family, friends, community members, and industry experts.
We believe there are multiple ways to launch into adulthood. College is one path, but not the only way. The Gathering exposes students to a variety of career opportunities, with a special emphasis on entrepreneurship and starting your own business.
A student-driven learning model puts students at the helm of their education. When students attend The Gathering, they have a voice in what they learn and how they learn it. Allowing students to make decisions and work independently on what needs to be completed develops life skills critical for adulthood.
Mastery-based learning ensures students reduce their academic gaps, preventing gaps in skills or concepts needed for higher-level learning. In this approach, students continue to try (and try again - and again - and again…), working on a skill or concept until it is mastered, achieving 100%.
Socratic discussion is used at The Gathering to facilitate discussions. Rather than being passive learners, Socratic discussions require students to be active participants. They learn to hear others' opinions, add their thoughts, and respectfully dispute opinions. In the end, students develop their critical thinking, active listening, and communication skills.
The Gathering uses a learning coach to mentor and guide students. In this environment, a learning coach is not an expert per se, but a learner, learning along with the students as they learn industry skills while helping solve real-world work-based problems.
Students are encouraged to find multiple apprenticeship opportunities. These apprenticeships provide students with experiences that help them grow their innate talents and passions while also clarifying future job and/or training opportunities.
Because learning is never age-specific and real-world work situations require students to interact with multiple ages and generations, students will be placed in multi-age learning groups to mimic real-world experiences while also learning the soft skills of leading, following, negotiating, decision-making, and collaboration.
Faith is openly discussed in all aspects of The Gathering Learning Studio. The Bible serves as the compass of Truth as students discuss morality, ethics, and culturally relevant topics of today.
